Our Approach

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)

At Remedy Therapy Center for Eating Disorders, we recognize the pivotal role that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) plays in the comprehensive treatment of eating disorders. CBT is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that focuses on the intricate interplay between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, aiming to identify and modify maladaptive patterns to foster positive change.

About What is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy?

CBT is rooted in the understanding that our thoughts influence our emotions and behaviors. This therapeutic modality, widely used in mental health treatment, empowers individuals to recognize and challenge negative thought patterns, replacing them with healthier alternatives. By doing so, CBT helps individuals develop coping strategies, problem-solving skills, and a more balanced perspective on themselves and their surroundings.

Treatment How We Use CBT in Eating Disorder Treatment

In the realm of eating disorder treatment at Remedy Therapy Center for Eating Disorders, cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders is a cornerstone of our approach. Here’s how we integrate CBT into our residential program:

Identification of Distorted Thoughts:

In the early stages of treatment, our skilled therapists work with individuals to identify distorted thoughts related to body image, food, weight, and self-worth. These thoughts often contribute to the development and maintenance of eating disorders.

Cognitive Restructuring:

Through CBT, individuals learn to challenge and reframe distorted thoughts. This process, known as cognitive restructuring, helps replace irrational or negative beliefs with more realistic and adaptive ones. For example, addressing perfectionism, fear of weight gain, or distorted body image perceptions.

Behavioral Techniques:

CBT incorporates behavioral techniques to modify harmful behaviors associated with eating disorders. This may include establishing regular meal patterns and addressing rituals or avoidance behaviors related to food.

Skill-Building for Coping:

CBT equips individuals with practical skills to cope with emotional distress, stress, or triggers without resorting to disordered eating behaviors. This includes developing healthier coping mechanisms and strategies for managing anxiety, depression, or other emotional challenges.

Meal Support and Exposure Therapy:

CBT is applied during meal support, helping individuals confront and challenge fears related to food and eating. Exposure therapy techniques are utilized to gradually and safely expose individuals to feared foods or situations, reducing anxiety and avoidance behaviors.

Relapse Prevention:

CBT plays a crucial role in relapse prevention by helping individuals anticipate and manage potential triggers for disordered eating. It empowers individuals with the tools to navigate challenging situations, maintain progress, and prevent the recurrence of unhealthy behaviors.

Addressing Core Beliefs:

Underlying core beliefs about self-worth, body image, and control are explored and addressed through CBT. This process helps individuals understand the roots of their eating disorder and work towards cultivating a healthier and more positive self-perception.

Importance Why CBT is Important for Eating Disorder Treatment:

Addressing Maladaptive Thought Patterns:

CBT focuses on identifying and challenging maladaptive thought patterns and beliefs related to body image, food, weight, and self-worth. By addressing these cognitive distortions, individuals can develop a more realistic and balanced perspective on themselves and their eating disorder.

Behavioral Change:

CBT emphasizes the modification of unhealthy behaviors associated with eating disorders, such as restrictive eating, binge eating, purging, or excessive exercise. Through behavioral experiments and exposure exercises, individuals learn alternative coping strategies and develop healthier habits around food and eating.

Skill Building:

CBT teaches practical skills for managing emotions, coping with stress, and problem-solving, which are essential for long-term recovery from eating disorders. These skills empower individuals to navigate triggers, cope with setbacks, and maintain progress beyond the therapy setting.

Relapse Prevention:

CBT equips individuals with strategies for recognizing early warning signs of relapse and implementing effective coping strategies to prevent a return to disordered eating behaviors. By addressing underlying vulnerabilities and risk factors, CBT helps individuals build resilience and maintain recovery over time.

Remedy has saved my life!!! Truly I mean that with all my heart. I came in broken I had just lost my best friend to suicide and my eating disorder got out of hand. As once told to me the eating disorder voice was way louder than my recovery voice. Since being here I have gained hope back and have a purpose to actually live, something I lost a long time ago and thought I’d never get back. I accept myself as is and now view food not as “healthy or unhealthy” but as food….food is food. I am beyond grateful for all the staff and the peers that were here while I was and there isn’t enough words to express my appreciation for them. Thank you remedy for helping me get my life back

i've been a patient at remedy therapy for a little over three months and i depart tomorrow. remedy is truly a very special place and i am grateful for all of the staff and other patients i have met on the way. i have been to so many treatment centers over the last decade and i will say they truly care about you here. never once have i felt unsafe because of anyone else. i will admit, i have not fully grasped the concept of recovery because i have not been fully ready for it but remedy has still supported me despite that and pushed me past my comfort zones. i had to learn to find comfort in the discomfort. remedy therapy is a place where healing truly begins. i would like to reiterate the fact that they truly care about you here. you are not just a number. amanda and jamie are the best dietitians i have ever worked with and you have amazing techs like ms. patti, jam, and jazz who see this job as more than just a job. i learned a lot about myself here. at remedy therapy, everything is individualized. therefore, they don't just slap a "one-size-fits-all" bandaid on your recovery. if anyone i know is struggling with an eating disorder, this is the place i would 1,000% recommend time and time again. to me, these people have become my recovery family. i've watched so many people come in struggling, myself included, and they walk out a completely different person. don't be afraid to reach out to remedy, they're just a phone call away. #beatingeatingdisorders

Going to Remedy Therapy was best decision I ever made. I went in feeling scared and alone, but left empowered and understood by the community as a whole. The environment was safe and fostered support like I've never seen. Like any treatment center, it had it's difficult moments, but I learned so much from the experience as a whole- not only about myself but compassion for others as well. Leaving my life behind to commit to this program was hard, but so worth it. The house was cozy, the staff was always there to listen and push me in the direction I needed to go, and the people just get you like nobody else. I have nothing but gratitude for Remedy and would highly recommend to anyone looking to make a positive change in their life. Shout-out to Miss Patti for her unwavering love for anyone who is lucky enough to know her.
